Ah, the dog days of summer. The mosquitos are out in droves, the sun is scorching your skin, and your house is blanketed in a thick layer of humidity. It's not just humans who find it difficult to get out of bed when it's so hot, though! Dogs are also feeling the effects of this brutal heat. Many are sleeping more than usual or have trouble sleeping at all because they're so uncomfortable - no wonder they've earned their nickname "man's best friend!" The good news is there are some things you can do to help your pup cool down. For example, you can leave the air-conditioning on in his or her room, set up an evaporative or water-cooled air-conditioner, play with your pet in the refrigerator, or splash your dog with cool water. But these techniques are short term solutions at best. Here are some ways you can help alleviate the hot doggy blues at home: 1. Put out a bowl of ice cubes for your dog to eat. The cold will help him feel cooler and more comfortable. This also works for baby birds! 2. If you're not heading outdoors for a walk/run/bike ride/etc. every day, invite your pet to join you in the house. He or she will be more comfortable if they're getting some extra exercise and air conditioning at home. 3. If your dog doesn't like the cold (or isn't able to tolerate it), try an evaporative air-conditioner that blows cool air into a sealed container where your pup lovingly snoozes. 4. Before you leave home for a trip, make sure it's cool enough in your house for your dog to sleep comfortably (even cool with the AC running). Keep the doors and windows closed, and make sure he or she can get out of bed easily. 5. Once you get home from vacation, don't forget to give your dog some extra attention and love. Don't worry if it's hard to get your dog to sleep while it's hot - he or she won't be around forever! And when the heat breaks, you'll be more than happy to give him or her a little extra space. Well that's all for this week's issue of the Sleeping Dog Newsletter. As always, I would love to hear any questions or comments you may have about the newsletter or any issues you would like us to cover in future editions so please feel free to email me at ewright@sleepingdogs. com. In the meantime, don't forget to keep your pups safe from the heat of summer and always remember - you love your dog, I love you dog! Catch ya later!
